The Substitute

We saw how Isaac, Jonah, Solomon and Moses were all shadows of Jesus who was to come. The animal sacrifice which took place in the Temple was also a shadow of Jesus who was to come.

Before an animal was sacrificed the person offering the sacrifice would place their hands on the animal’s head which symbolically transferred their sin onto the animal. When the animal was slain the penalty for that sin would have then been paid.

The animal had become a substitute for the one who had committed the sin so they did not have to die, just as Jesus has become the Substitute for your sin and my sin so we don’t have to die…

Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

2 Corinthians 5:21
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

So…

Whose your Substitute?
